Popular ice cream brand Havmor has been fined Rs 50,000 by the Ahmedabad civic body following a complaint from a woman who claimed to have found a lizard’s tail in one of their cone ice creams.
The incident came to light after the woman recorded a video of the discovery and shared it on her social media platform.
The woman had bought the cone ice cream for herself and her children from one of Havmor’s flagship stores in the Maninagar area of Ahmedabad.
In the viral video, the woman revealed that she had been feeling unwell and had been vomiting repeatedly after consuming the ice cream.
“We bought four cones. We found this in one of the cones (pointing to the lizard’s tail). I have been vomiting continuously. Thankfully, my children didn’t eat it. If anything happens, we will file a case against the company. Please check the products before consuming them,” she said in the video.
According to officials, the woman was rushed to a nearby hospital after consuming the ice cream. She is still receiving treatment, NDTV reported.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has since sealed the ice cream parlour, Mahalaxmi Corner, after discovering that the store did not have a valid license under the Food Safety Act. Additionally, a fine of Rs 50,000 was imposed on Havmor, the ice cream brand.
In its statement regarding the incident, Havmor said, “At Havmor, product quality and consumer trust are at the heart of everything we do. Understanding the seriousness of the matter, our team promptly reached out to the customer to investigate.”
“We have made multiple attempts to connect with the customer and have requested that she provide the said ice cream cone so we may conduct a thorough investigation. Unfortunately, the customer has not yet handed over the sample, which restricts our ability to examine the matter further and determine whether the issue lies with the individual pack or involves any breach in supply chain integrity,” they added.
“We would also like to clarify that a team of food inspectors visited our facility on 14.05.2025 and found it to be in compliance with food safety standards. Contrary to recent media reports, no penalty was imposed. However, an administrative charges of INR 50,000 was levied by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC).
