The operation in Kulgam entered Day 3 as the exchange of fire continued between the terrorists and security forces in the forest area. Two terrorists have been killed, while one has been injured in the ongoing operation.
One soldier has also sustained injuries during the gunfight. The terrorists are suspected to be part of a group of four to five or more individuals.
Earlier on Saturday, the officials have confirmed about the killing of two other terrorists. The initial probe revealed that a killed terrorist, identified as Haris Nazir Dar, hailed from Rajpora in Pulwama.
“Intermittent and intense firefights continued through the night. Alert troops responded with calibrated fire and tightened the noose while maintaining contact. One terrorist has been neutralised by the security forces so far,” the Chinar Corps of the Indian Army said in its latest update on Operation Akhal.
This came after security forces launched a cordon and search operation in the Akhal forest area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, acting on specific intelligence regarding the presence of terrorists, a police official had said.
A search operation was launched in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam, based on intelligence received by the security forces about the presence of terrorists in the area.
The firing began on Friday after security forces launched a cordon and search operation in a forest area at Akhal in the south Kashmir district. The operation was halted for the night after an initial exchange of fire between the two sides on Friday evening.
The cordon was tightened, and more reinforcements were deployed to the area. According to officials, firing resumed on Saturday morning, leading to the killing of two terrorists.
The search operation turned into an encounter after the hiding terrorists opened fire at the forces, who retaliated, an official was earlier quoted as saying by PTI.
Earlier this week, three terrorists involved in the Pahalgam terror attack – Suleiman alias Faizal Jat, Jibran, and Hamza Afghani – were killed as part of Operation Mahadev.
